ARTIST STATEMENT

I paint and/or draw organic grids that are a simple material layering — an exploration of and through material. Within that material exploration is relationship — the relationship of line to line to color to shape to edge to skin, and viewer to an environment. I amass horizontal and vertical lines that position me in a landscape that subjectively explores social bundling as well as the emotional movement of wind on water. The landscape and how we view it places us, tells us who we are.

These drawings and paintings can also be seen as a build up of opposites. I find it most exciting when the opposites do not balance but coexist, when their resolution is a simultaneity - a this in conjunction with that. The act of painting tells a story and covers it up. The lines assert and deny narrative. I am interested in the repetitive line accumulating significance - the single gesture repeated into a flow of energy. A landscape that returns to a line and the line that references the whole as one of the imperfect individuals that accumulates to make up the group.
